July 23, 2009 - LIGHTENING STRIKES CLOSE TO HOME!A lightening strike ignited a fire on a ridge on the north side of Hawkins Lake in the evening. Hawkins Lake firefighters responded quickly, but were faced with the difficult job of climbing up some rough terrain with chainsaws and shovels to knock it down and contain the blaze. The area was inaccessible by vehicle. A BC Forestry 3 man "RAP" Crew (Rapid Response Crew) arrived in short order with a helicopter, and stayed on scene until the fire was extinguished completely.July 24, 2009 - BURNING & CAMPFIRE BAN Fire Chief Bob Campbell reports that he has been advised by the BC Ministry of Forests that a ban on all outside burning - including campfires - is effective immediately in our area until further notice. BBQs are exempted from this ban.
BC Ministry of Forests Fire officials and members of the HLVFFA will be on fire patrol throughout the coming days as conditions are not expected to impove anytime soon.
Please be sure to pass this information along to your friends, neighbours, and fellow members...thank you!
WILDFIRE AVERTEDJune 18, 2009: Lightening struck a large fir tree near Eagle Creek Road between Hawkins Lake & Canim Lake during a violent thunderstorm, blowing the top off and setting it on fire. Hawkins Lake Firefighters responded, dousing the flames and containing what could easily have become a wildfire. The lightening split the trunk, making it too dangerous to fall.
The tree continues to smoulder, but there is a pump on site and we are monitoring it. Cool wet weather following the thunderstorm is helping the effort. |
